ERP Implementation as Design: Looking at participatory design for means to facilitate knowledge integration

چکیده
ERP system implementations are often problematic leading to numerous problems during and after the introduction. Although user involvement is regarded as an important success factor, the implementation difficulties indicate a lack of understanding of the process as well as methods and tools to mediate it. We argue that ERP implementations have to be understood as design processes requiring knowledge integration across different domains, and that appropriate activities should be performed to facilitate the knowledge integration. We use an in-depth case study of an ERP implementation to support our claim; applying a design perspective shows how knowledge integration problems lead to difficulties in the implementation process. Based on these results we discuss different remedies from the participatory design discourse.

El-Jardali and Fadllallah provide an excellent summary of the many dimensions of knowledge use, and the breath of issues and activities that must be considered if knowledge is to be put into practice. However, reliance on a continuum (rather than a cyclical, multidirectional, systems) model creates a number of limitations, particularly when promoting evidence-informed action in the areas of hea...

Following a previous description of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementations as participatory design (Pries-Heje & Dittrich, 2009), this paper explores the case of a medium-sized, family-owned manufacturing company and its endeavors with changing their current ERP system. The case was selected on the premise of it being perceived a success by the involved stakeholders. Through a serie...

BACKGROUND A gap continues to exist between what is known to be effective and what is actually delivered in the usual course of medical care. The goal of implementation research is to reduce this gap. However, a tension exists between the need to obtain generalizeable knowledge through implementation trials, and the inherent differences between healthcare organizations that make standard interv...
